Why Does Joint Pain Increase During the Rainy Season?

Insights from Dr. Vishad Viswanath (Rheumatologist &Immunologist)
As the monsoon arrives, many people with arthritis begin to notice the same troubling pattern; increased joint pain, stiffness, and discomfort. “It hurts more when it rains.” For years, this was often dismissed as a myth or simply an old belief passed down through generations. However, clinical observations and several scientific studies now suggest that weather changes can genuinely influence arthritis symptoms in many individuals. According to Dr. Vishad Viswanath, Clinical Immunologist and Rheumatologist, many arthritis patients commonly report worsening pain and stiffness during monsoon seasons. While weather may not affect every patient in the same way, clinical experience and research both suggest that cold temperatures, humidity, and reduced physical activity can influence arthritis symptoms in susceptible individuals. While not every patient experiences worsening pain during rainy weather, many people with arthritis report feeling more stiffness and discomfort during cold, damp, or humid conditions.
What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation, swelling, pain, or stiffness in the joints. It may also affect the surrounding structures that support the joints, including ligaments, tendons, and muscles. There are more than 100 different forms of Arthritis, but they are broadly divided into two major categories.
1. Autoimmune Arthritis
In Autoimmune Arthritis, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own joints and tissues. Common examples include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus (SLE), Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis, and Gout. These conditions often involve chronic inflammation and may affect people at a younger age, especially women.
2. Degenerative Arthritis
Degenerative arthritis develops due to gradual wear and tear of the joints over time. The most common type is Osteoarthritis, particularly affecting the knees, hips, neck, and spine. Ageing is a major factor, but today, sedentary lifestyles, obesity, repetitive strain, and excessive sports activity are also contributing to earlier joint degeneration.
Why Does Rainy Weather Trigger More Joint Pain?
Researchers are still studying the exact relationship between weather and arthritis symptoms. However, several scientific theories and clinical studies suggest that cold weather, humidity, and changes in atmospheric pressure may contribute to increased pain and stiffness in some patients.
1. Cold Temperature and Muscle Tightness
When the weather becomes cold, the body naturally tries to conserve heat. As a result, muscles tend to tighten and contract. This muscle tightening can increase pressure around already inflamed or damaged joints, making movement more painful and causing stiffness. Many arthritis patients especially notice increased discomfort during early mornings in cold weather.
2. Low Barometric Pressure
One of the most discussed scientific explanations involves changes in barometric pressure ; the pressure exerted by the atmosphere. During rainy weather, atmospheric pressure often drops. This change may create subtle expansion inside the joints, leading to increased pressure on pain-sensitive nerves. Some experts describe this as a “ballooning effect” within the joints, which may worsen pain perception in sensitive individuals.
3. Increased Humidity
High humidity levels during monsoon may also influence arthritis symptoms. Humidity can affect blood vessels, sweat glands, and pain receptors in the body. Although the exact mechanism is still being researched, many patients report heavier joints and increased stiffness during humid conditions.
4. Changes in Synovial Fluid
Inside every healthy joint is a lubricating fluid called synovial fluid. This fluid helps joints move smoothly and reduces friction. Cold temperatures may increase the viscosity, or thickness, of synovial fluid. When the fluid becomes thicker, joints may feel stiffer, and movement can become more uncomfortable.
5. Reduced Physical Activity
Rainy days often lead to less movement and more time spent indoors. Reduced physical activity can result in muscle tightness, reduced flexibility, increased stiffness, and weakening of supporting muscles. Regular movement is extremely important for maintaining healthy joint function.
6. Lower Vitamin D Levels
Sunlight exposure often decreases during the monsoon season. This may contribute to Vitamin D deficiency, which can affect bone strength, muscle health, immune function, and joint health. Low Vitamin D levels may worsen musculoskeletal pain in some individuals.
7. Viral Infections During Monsoon
Monsoon season is also associated with infections such as dengue fever, chikungunya, and other viral fevers. Certain viral infections, especially chikungunya, can cause severe joint pain and swelling that sometimes resemble inflammatory arthritis conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis. In people already living with autoimmune arthritis, infections may also trigger worsening symptoms or disease flare-ups.
Does Rainy Weather Affect Everyone the Same Way?
Interestingly, not every arthritis patient experiences worsening symptoms during rainy weather. Some people are highly sensitive to weather changes, while others notice very little difference. Pain perception, disease severity, lifestyle, muscle strength, sleep quality, stress levels, and overall health may all influence how weather affects an individual patient.
Simple Tips to Manage Arthritis During Monsoon
Although weather cannot be controlled, certain lifestyle measures may help reduce discomfort during rainy seasons.
Stay Physically Active
Even during rainy days, try to walk indoors regularly, practice stretching exercises, try yoga or gentle mobility workouts, and avoid sitting for long hours. Movement helps maintain flexibility and muscle strength.
Keep Your Body Warm
Maintaining warmth may help reduce stiffness and muscle tightness. Helpful measures include warm water baths, warm fluids, comfortable warm clothing, and heating pads for painful joints.
Do Not Skip Medicines
Some patients delay follow-up visits or stop medications during rainy weather or viral infections. This can worsen inflammation and trigger arthritis flare-ups. Always consult your doctor before stopping any medication.
Prevent Falls at Home
Wet floors and slippery surfaces increase the risk of falls, especially in elderly arthritis patients. To improve safety, keep floors dry, ensure proper lighting, remove obstacles, and use supportive footwear indoors.
Support Your Immunity
Healthy sleep, proper nutrition, hydration, and hygiene are important during monsoon season to reduce the risk of infections.
When Should You See a Doctor?
Do not ignore joint pain if you experience persistent swelling, morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes, difficulty using joints, fever associated with joint pain, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can help prevent long-term joint damage and improve quality of life.
Living Better With Arthritis During Monsoon
Joint pain worsening during rainy weather is not entirely a myth. For many arthritis patients, weather changes can genuinely influence pain and stiffness. Cold temperature, humidity, reduced physical activity, low Vitamin D levels, and changes in atmospheric pressure may all contribute to worsening symptoms. However, with proper medical care, regular exercise, warmth, healthy lifestyle habits, and timely treatment, arthritis symptoms can often be managed effectively even during the monsoon season. If your symptoms persist or interfere with daily life, consult a rheumatologist for proper evaluation and treatment.
