Recognising Cancer Symptoms in Children

Recognising Cancer Symptoms in Children

When children fall sick, even with minor illnesses, it often leaves parents anxious and overwhelmed. Their usual laughter fades, and we immediately sense something is wrong. So, when a serious diagnosis like cancer enters the picture, the emotional toll can be devastating. One of the biggest challenges is that cancer in children can be difficult to detect early — mainly because it is rare, and most parents don’t even consider it a possibility.

However, cancer can affect children, and that’s exactly why awareness of early warning signs is so critical. In this blog, Dr. Raghu K S, Pediatric Oncologist at Tata Medical Institute, Kolkata, highlights the subtle and sometimes deceptive symptoms of childhood cancer — so that parents and caregivers can act early and wisely.

Why Early Detection Is Hard

In many cases, the symptoms of cancer in children mimic those of common infections — fever, fatigue, body aches, or lumps under the skin. Because these are familiar signs of everyday childhood illnesses, parents rarely suspect anything serious at first. But if these symptoms persist longer than usual, or don’t respond to standard treatments, they must not be ignored.

Danger Signs to Watch For

While some symptoms are subtle, others may be more alarming — what we call “danger signs.” These include:

  • Unusual lumps or swelling in the neck, chest, abdomen, or armpits
  • Rapidly growing lymph nodes (often mistaken for infection-related swelling)
  • Prolonged fever, unexplained fatigue, and noticeable weight loss
  • Loss of appetite or early feeling of fullness during meals
  • Persistent pain in bones or joints, sometimes mistaken for growing pains

For example, neuroblastoma, a cancer common in children under five, may present as a growing mass in the abdomen. Similarly, Wilms’ tumor, a kidney cancer, often affects children between 3–4 years old and causes abdominal swelling.

Eye Symptoms and Brain-Related Signs

Some cancers like retinoblastoma affect the eyes. Parents may notice a white reflection in the pupil instead of the usual red-eye in photos, or changes in eye movement.

Brain tumors may show up as:

  • Headaches, especially in the morning
  • Vomiting not related to food intake
  • Balance issues
  • Sudden changes in behavior
  • Seizures (epileptic episodes)

Leukemia: A Common Childhood Cancer

Leukemia — cancer of the blood and bone marrow — may show up as:

  • Unexplained bruises or red/purple skin patches
  • Recurring infections
  • Severe fatigue or pale skin
  • Swelling in lymph nodes or joints

While these signs may not appear all at once, persistent symptoms that resist treatment should always prompt medical consultation.

Trust Your Instincts, Act Early

Children don’t always show severe symptoms at the start of a serious illness. And because of their age, they may not fully express what they’re feeling. That’s why parental vigilance and medical guidance are so important. If something feels off — especially when routine symptoms don’t resolve — consult a pediatric specialist.
