National Ayurveda Day 2025: Ayurveda for People & Planet

National Ayurveda Day 2025: Ayurveda for People & Planet

Every year, India celebrates National Ayurveda Day—a day devoted to recognizing the ancient science of Ayurveda, its relevance in today’s world, and its potential to heal not just individuals but communities and the planet.

What’s New in 2025

  • For the first time since 2016, Ayurveda Day will be observed on a fixed date: 23 September every year.
  • Previously, the observance was tied to Dhanvantari Jayanti (also known as Dhanteras), which changes annually with the lunar calendar.
  • The theme for 2025 is “Ayurveda for People & Planet”, emphasizing not only wellness for individuals, but also environmental balance and sustainability.
  • The Government of India declared this change via a Gazette Notification in March 2025.

Why the Change Matters

  • Consistency & Global Recognition: Fixing a date (23 September) helps in organizing events uniformly across India, and promotes wider awareness in international communities.
  • Symbolic Timing: September 23 usually lies close to the autumnal equinox, a time of balance between day and night. This ties in symbolically with Ayurveda’s perennial focus on balance—between mind, body, and nature.
  • Amplified Focus on Collective Well-Being: The theme “People & Planet” reframes Ayurveda from just personal health to broader environmental wellness—highlighting sustainable health practices, the importance of medicinal plants, avoidance of chemical pollution, diet practices aligned with seasons, etc.

What to Expect in Celebrations

  • National Events & Honoring Practitioners: The All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), Goa will host the 2025 main event. Distinguished contributors will receive the National Dhanwantari Ayurveda Awards.
  • New Infrastructure & Healthcare Facilities: Several facilities will be inaugurated at AIIA Goa, including an Integrative Oncology Unit, Blood Storage Unit, Linen Processing Unit, and more.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Health camps, medicinal plant distributions, yoga & wellness sessions are planned. Emphasis on diet (Ayurvedic food), natural lifestyle adjustments, and preventive healthcare.

Ayurveda’s Relevance in Contemporary Times

  • Rising Lifestyle Disorders: Conditions like obesity, stress, hypertension, metabolic syndrome are growing fast. Ayurveda’s preventive approach—diet, daily discipline (dinacharya), seasonal adjustments (ritucharya)—offers tools to manage and prevent such disorders.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Ayurveda places value on medicinal plants, sustainable harvest, and nature-friendly practices. With growing ecological challenges, these ancient practices can help in conserving biodiversity and healing the planet.
  • Scientific Integration: Ministries and research institutions are working on evidence-based validation of Ayurvedic herbs, formulations, and therapies. Use of digital health tools, integration with modern medicine, bringing certainty to claims.

How You Can Participate

  • Visit your local Ayurvedic practitioner for a consultation or health camp.
  • Incorporate small Ayurvedic rituals into daily life: oil massage (abhyanga), herbal teas, seasonal foods, mindful breathing, etc.
  • Grow or support the cultivation of medicinal plants in your garden or community.
  • Spread awareness—share information, participate in events, or volunteer initiatives.

Challenge & Call to Action

Ayurveda is more than an ancient heritage—it is a science of life that needs to evolve and adapt. As we face climate change, lifestyle disease, urban stress, and environmental degradation, adopting Ayurvedic principles isn’t just nostalgic—it’s necessary.

This National Ayurveda Day, let us all commit to:

  • respecting Ayurvedic wisdom
  • supporting sustainability
  • making choices that balance health of self and planet.

Because when we heal ourselves, we also nurture the earth, and in turn, the earth heals us.
